How Gamuda Boosts Productivity by 88% with Autodesk Construction Cloud
Gamuda, the multi-award-winning engineering and construction company, is reaping the benefits of continued innovation through digital transformation. Across recent projects, including a vital rail project in Singapore, Gamuda has seen efficiency gains by streamlining processes and increased visibility with Autodesk Construction Cloud.
From Strength to Strength with a Digital Transformation
The prominent Malaysian company has been working on CR111 – a rail, station, and tunnel project with a value of $440 million. On this project, they are working in collaboration with local partners WaiFong, with Autodesk serving as their digital technology partner.
The project is a proving ground for Gamuda’s ongoing digital transformation journey, which has made big strides since adopting Autodesk Construction Cloud in September 2022. The adoption has revolutionized its business across a number of markets.
Central to this journey is Autodesk Construction Cloud’s role as a common digital platform for Gamuda’s projects. Since 2022, Gamuda has not looked back, extensively embracing new technology.
On the design side, Gamuda is deploying Revit, Navisworks, and BIM Collaborate. Additionally, they use Autodesk Docs for managing files, drawings, and models and Autodesk Build for digitising and streamlining quality and safety processes, and handling interim payment applications, certifications, subcontracts, and the bill of quantities.
By leveraging Autodesk Construction Cloud, Gamuda is discovering new opportunities in greater productivity and efficiency and is looking forward to a more streamlined future.
Providing Extra Visibility of Project Operation
On a project of this magnitude, visibility is key.
Arthur Mun, Group Digital Engineering Manager, says, “We implement systems to streamline processes and capture data for progress monitoring and reporting, thereby providing visibility and insights to the project team and management.”
Gamuda relishes the visibility Autodesk Construction Cloud enables on their projects. By digitising their processes on the platform, they can understand exactly what is happening to improve productivity. As Arthur says, “for us to be agile in making decisions, we need to have data at our fingertips.”
And data at their fingertips they have. Gamuda also uses Autodesk Construction Cloud’s open APIs to extract data for monitoring and reporting purposes.
From the Old Way to the New
The transformation that Gamuda has experienced is a direct response to the power of new technology and an urge to change from the traditional, inefficient, and siloed ways of working,
“In construction, we have the operation, quality, safety, design, contracts, and commercial teams whose ways of working are fragmented,” he says.
Traditionally, these teams are divided.
“Usually, they will work on separate legacy systems. And essentially, they're existing in silos. Their processes are not connected,” he says.
When you combine a disconnected and manual way of working, the challenges of the old way become even more apparent.
“The traditional way of working, where data is siloed in someone's computer or in paper format, requires a lot of time and effort to gather any insights,” says Arthur.
The benefits of a digital environment are clear as day.
“With Autodesk Construction Cloud, when everyone works in the same platform, data is captured in the same ecosystem. There are features and functionalities within Autodesk Construction Cloud that allow us to link processes together, thereby helping us create an integrated approach to working collaboratively,” Arthur says.
A Digital Transformation Leads to a Boost in Performance
Gamuda is breaking down silos and increasing collaboration through an integrated approach. Moreover, the company is streamlining processes by reducing the need to manually handle data, minimizing effort, improving efficiency, sharing more accurate data, and reducing errors.
The impact has been seen across the company, from design to construction to cost management.
With the help of Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Docs, Autodesk Build, Gamuda has effectively removed manual layers of work, achieving an 88% time saving and increase in productivity.
In the construction stage, Autodesk Construction Cloud’s practical and powerful management of digital versions of Permits to Work is rendering a 91% time saving or increase in productivity when compared to Gamuda’s previous paper-driven process.
The use of Autodesk Construction Cloud’s Cost Management capability has facilitated transparency of workflows, provided better cost controls based on Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS), and allowed for the consolidation of information in one single source of truth. This has enhanced accountability and transparency while reducing errors especially when handling subcontractor’s claims and budgets.
The overall claims processing from payment application to payment approval and certification has improved by at least 60%. This is mainly due to the reduction of manual processes, especially in approval process and verifications. In addition, subcontractors are able to submit their claims directly within the system instead of emailing. This allows for the seamless coordination of project details, ensuring that communications and updates with subcontractors are captured and streamlined in a single platform.
Autodesk Construction Cloud Assists with Safety, Compliance and Sustainability
On top of these productivity benefits, Gamuda is also seeing improvements in safety, compliance, and sustainability.
Access to extensive data and complete visibility across the project has enabled Gamuda to make targeted decisions. They can enforce specific processes because they have a greater awareness of what is happening. For example, if a contractor is receiving a high number of non-conformance reports (NCRs), the visibility of data ensures Gamuda’s team can act quickly to ensure rectification measures have been taken.
Additionally, using the data collected by the platform, Gamuda can further audit contractors and processes to ensure the right actions are being taken, adding a layer of compliance.
Finally, Autodesk Construction Cloud enables greater sustainability in several ways. One example is by reducing manual intensive work on the project site, leading to a positive environmental impact due to reducing reworks and wastage. Another is the system’s ability to facilitate precise decision-making in design. As Arthur says, “We are exploring Autodesk Construction Cloud as a platform to track and quantify embodied carbon in our model to refine our design.”
Streamlining Processes for Even Better Results
With their digital transformation continuing at pace, Gamuda is enjoying the shift from the old way of working to the new. With data and insight comes greater foresight. And with partnership and collaboration, come positive shifts towards a more efficient future.
As Arthur puts it, “By having all this information captured in a system, we can analyse and create insights, which help with our business goals in improving visibility, certainty, agility and productivity.”
