The Problem

Dedicated to delivering all phases of their customers’ specific requirements, Influit provides oil and gas services to a range of projects. They offer a variety of solutions including fast-track production facilities and water treatment systems; project engineering; design; procurement and operations maintenance services from concept to operation. Influit’s mission is to foster trusted working relationships while providing experience, skills and industry-leading knowledge to deliver fast track, cost effective customer-focused solutions.

Although a relatively new company, Influit is mainly made up of experienced industry engineers supporting engineering solutions for both onshore and offshore oil and gas projects. With offices in Iraq, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and the UK, their employees are increasingly collaborating across geographies and disciplines on a range of projects for their customers.

“Around 18 months ago we began exploring tools for our design operations and that’s when we were introduced to BIM 360 by Autodesk,” says Paul Rafferty, Piping Designer at Influit. “We support our customers on projects across a vast array of geographies; we’re currently working on projects in Iraq and Madagascar so being able to collaborate efficiently and improve connectivity across our global teams is really important.”

Paul’s role involves working with process engineers on devising the best layouts for their customers’ oil plants and the associated piping within it. The process design drawings for Influit are delivered from their team in Indonesia but the engineering side of projects are delivered from the UK, so they needed to find a solution to improve collaboration across the globe that was more efficient than their previous ways of working.

Process flow sheets are key to many of the projects delivered by Influit and inform the entire design and construction lifecycle. However, the team were finding that by following more traditional ways of working (which involved manually marking up design amendments and comments on printed drawings, scanning and sharing them via email) led to an increased risk of mistakes being made. Teams also found that there could be confusion over the latest revision of a drawing because they lacked the collaboration tools that gave them access to the latest documents on a project at their fingertips.

To overcome these issues, the team introduced BIM 360 by Autodesk Construction Solutions to a particular project where collaboration was taking place amongst colleagues in the UK and Indonesia.

“We intended to use BIM 360 purely as a design tool to link up design models (piping and equipment models as well as process drawing sheets) on a particular project but we soon realised the benefits that the solution could offer through improved document control.

The Solution

Paul was the first person in Influit to be trained on BIM 360, and was responsible for introducing it to the rest of the team. “Some of our engineers were a little sceptical at first as it was a brand new way of working for them and also the first time they’d ever had to mark-up drawings and process flow sheets online,” says Paul. “After a little learning on the job, they quickly came around and a lot of the feedback I received was about how intuitive the technology was to use.”

“The fact that we’re able to make amendments and suggestions on drawings and process flow sheets which are instantly visible to our colleagues in our Indonesian office is a real game changer,” remarks Paul. Influit invested in iPads for their team to work remotely and out in the field if they need to. Paul recounts, “One of our team members asked me what the technology could do for him and, as he lived in Cornwall, I joked that he could mark up drawings on the beach. To my delight, he came in the following week telling me that his most recent drawing mark ups travelled 6,987 miles in the flash of an eye from Cornwall to Bhutan thanks to using BIM 360.”

The time savings made by using BIM 360 as well as the more reliable and efficient ways of working has helped to transform relationships across geographies for Influit. Paul says, “Not only can the team collaborate in real-time on projects, there’s an additional layer of trust created. We’re able to add comments to documents, drawings and models assigning our names against them, which improves accountability on our projects.”

“After first using BIM 360 on one project, we’ve begun to roll it out on an extended basis. For the latest project I’m working on, we’ve given our customer access to the technology by creating their own folder in BIM 360. This has also improved accountability not only amongst our internal colleagues but also with our customers. The feedback from this client has been excellent. They’ve been impressed at how easy the technology is to use and appreciate the extra layer of transparency of the tool. With comments attributed to a particular member of the team this ensures there is no confusion over the direction of travel or status on this project,” concludes Paul.
